Shirley is a story of the complicated friendship between two women Caroline and Shirley. Shirley is a rich independent heiress; her friend Caroline is not. The romantic entanglements of the two women with Louis, the penniless tutor, and Robert, his cloth-manufacturing brother, claims of passion against the boundaries of class and society.

The novel was published in 1849 following the success of Jane Eyre.
